Andrew Goodwins theory based on Kesha-Tik Tok

Dancing to Distraction (1992) Theories of Music Videos

1. Music Videos Demonstrate genre characteristics:
Stage performance in metal video
Dance routine for boy/girl band

2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals
Illustrative
Amplifying
Contradicting

3. There is a relationship between music and visuals
Illustrative
Amplifying
Contradicting

4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lot of close-ups of the artist:
the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work visual style.

5. There is frequently reference to the notion of looking:
Screens within screens, telescopes etc.
A particular voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

6. There is often intertextual reference:
To films,
TV programmes, other music videos, etc.

Kesha-Tok Tok Video applying to this theory . . .

1. The genre characteristics for this video show a typical teenage party and visuals of Kesha singing.

2. The relationship between the lyrics and the visuals is seen through showing clips of exactly what she is saying, for example when she sings 'Before i leave, brush my teeth' you see a visual of her brushing her teeth. This gives an illustrative look to the video.

3. The relationship between music and visuals is shown through camera editing, when the music beat is faster the cutting and editing is faster when the song slows down so does the cutting and editing.

4. The kesha video includes lots of close-ups which are given across as a way to attract her audience, you notice the whole way through the video she is always in the center and the only close-ups are of her.

5. There is frequently reference to the notion of looking, particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body. This is a very strong point at the beginning of the video with her lying in the bath and then her getting ready. there is movement of camera from the bottom to top of her. This is also shown when she gets to the 'party scene,' more close up of female body parts.

6. There is an intertextual reference of Jessica Simpson-These boots are made for walking, with the whole 'cowgirl' boots and denim shorts look.

Album Cover Design

^^^ I have used the above image to create two different album covers. I thought this image could be quite fun because of the distortion in shape change. It also works as it relates back to my AS coursework with having the same 'band member,' people would have already heard about them and releasing a CD with him on the front would appeal to the audience who enjoyed the article in the magazine.

^^^ This was my first cover i designed using the image above. I decided to use images of everyone featured in the video to give a visual idea of what the video is all about. I stuck to the colour scheme of the magazine, red/black and white. I think the way i have placed all the images together it seems very busy and 'exciting,' which would attract people and make them want to get involved. The only thing i would say i don't like about the design of this cover is the quality of images, none of them apart from the center image seem strong enough to look professional.

^^^ This was my final design i came up with for an album cover. I think it is alot stronger than the others as there is a main focal point which relates to the AS coursework and the main character in the video. I really like the way it looks as if the subject is jumping out of the image, it invites people in. The band name and song name is clearly seen, which makes a wider audience get an attraction to it with it being easier to identify who and what its about.

Second Album Cover Idea

^^^ This was another sign post i had found when looking for ideas for my album cover and i thought it could be quite fun to use. I don't think this cover will work as well as it will only attract a younger audience. It also doesn't promote the band very well as there are no visuals of them, to attract the viewer.

Album Covers and ideas

^^^ This was the original image. I found it when searching 'road signs' on google images. I though it could represent the words 'wont you take me to funkytown' in the way of the sign showing which direction funky town is.

I then cut out the outline of the people in the above image to make both the images fit together. I decided to use this images as everyone looks so excited/happy and would attract people. I then changed the sign to say 'Lipps Inc' on one side and 'FunkyTown' on the other.

I don't think the final outcome of this CD cover is strong enough to be a final as it doesn't look very professional which would not attract to many people.

Preliminary Task

For my preliminary task i am creating a CD cover to promote my new video for Lipps Inc - FunkyTown. I want my album cover to relate to my coursework from last year using the band leader as the main focus and also using the same colour themes of black, red and white. I also want my CD cover to have a look which will relate to its audience so they feel as if they are part of 'all the fun.'
For my second preliminary task i am going to create a web page to promote the video. I will create this web page on Myspace as recently people use Myspace to find music as its easy available, free and they can find bands they love and listen to their music and find out what they do. So i think this site will be really reliable for gaining fans which will promote the video more as people would tell their friends about the new video.
I think doing the preliminary task will be really helpful as if you want to promote something you need to promote it in more than one way, being the product itself. Music video channels aren't going to put your video on their channel if they know you have no 'fans' as the channel would loose 'fans' if it was something the public hadn't come across before. So doing the preliminary tasks will help the video have success in all areas as it will be seen by a wider public audience.

Plans for the video

Location: I want to set my video in a place where people could make an intertextual reference so i decided I'm going to film the video at my house - living room, kitchen, bedrooms, bathroom, hall way and front garden. I am also going to use part of the road i live down.

Shot list: My video is going to mainly contain point of view shots, with panning shots at the party. I will have hand held shots to create a more approachable feel to the audience with some shots using a tripod. I will have a few close ups but mainly mid-shits and also some wide-angle shots with some zooming in to focus on something.

Character list: Amanda Corless, Tom Corless, Louise Corless, Andre Nombreuse, Gemma Mills and Tom Purchase.

Analysis of the codes and conventiond of narrative genre

Obviously, most narratives are made to 'tell a story,' or to help people make sense of things. In everything we seek a beginning, a middle and an end. We understand and construct meaning using our experience of reality or an intertextual reference of something we have seen before. Each experience or reference becomes part of the previous and the next through its relationship with the audience.

When looking at a narrative in order to find its meaning, there are a series of codes and conventions that need to be considered:

Genre
Character
Form
Time

The genre for a narrative can be anything as long as it is recognisable to an audience.

The genre of the song I'm using is 'Disco' and the genre/style of video I'm as an influence is Dance/Electropop.

Influences for my music video

I got some of my influences from the Skins opening theme tune clips to create this 'party' atmosphere. With the fast cuts, and clips of 'wild' things what happen at party's i also got party influences from Kiesha-Tik Tok music video. I didn't want to just show clips of what happens during the party, i wanted to create a narrative of everyone getting ready and arriving and leaving together to show friendship and lifestyle so that an audience can relate to the video i got my narrative idea from the Kesha video as well as it starts of with her getting ready and leaving for a party. I think Kesha-Tik Tok video was my biggest influence as it shows the narrative i want to present through my own video. In a way Kesha's video rebels against what her parents want whereas i want mine to rebel against what the original video represents.

Main influence for my music video

My main music video influence was Kesha - Tok Tok, this is because it has a very visual narrative, which is what i want to show through my video. Although her video has narrative as well as clips of her singing vocals, i want mine to be purely narrative.
Her video is very 'pastiche,' its simply imitating something in order to sell it. She does this by having references which her audience will be able to relate to. For example, her brushing her teeth, which is a regular daily routine for everyone. when people recognise something and can relate to it they want to buy it. It then shows her getting ready for a 'big night out' putting on her boots and walking through her kitchen (where her family are enjoying a meal) to the door showing a rebellious contrast between her and her family. I don't want to create a contrast between people, i want to create one through the original video for 'funkytown' and my make of 'funkytown.'
When she is putting on her 'western American cowgirl boots' this reminded me of Jessica Simpson - These boots are made for walking. When the party scene starts, straight away it reminds me of 'Skins.' It reminds me of 'skins' because of the amount of light exposed and the whole movement of the clips with the fast cuts and flashing lights. This is what creates the 'bricolage' which is the coming together of different intertextual references to create one idea or one piece.
I want to create my 'funkytown' video in a way for people to relate back to the 'Tik Tok' video, as i think its a video made for people to be able to relate to which makes people want to buy the video.

My Presentation Feedback

I think i done well with my presentation as i got all of my ideas down and presented them in a way everyone could get an idea of what i want my video outcome to be. I tried to show images of how it will appear and wrote about everything i am going to show. I also talked about ideas i will try out and the ones i will defiantly use. i think that looking at the history of the original video helped me as it told me what people liked and what they didn't like. Also researching other peoples attempts of re-creating the video gave me many ore ideas as i could see how other people interpreted the song and created their own ideas.

My Media Project

For my A2 media studies I was set the task to produce either a film trailer or a music video. We had the summer to decide which we were going to choose and I came to the conclusion that I would create a music video for the song "Funkytown" by ‘Lipps Inc.’ Over the summer I put some of my ideas together in a presentation that I then presented to the class.
